Those in the military do a great duty for our country, but often forgotten in the thanks are the families they leave behind. That’s why former U.S. Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger designated April as Month of the Military Child back in 1986. It’s a tribute to the 2 million children whose parents serve the country — and of that number, 20,000 have lost a parent in service. To help keiki that fall into the latter category, Children of Fallen Patriots has stepped in to help.

Recently, the organization honored University of Hawai‘iWest O‘ahu’s Chelsea Briggs for her work in raising awareness about its mission. Her dad — U.S. Air Force officer Raymond Briggs — died in 2010, and with that tragedy came the unease of wondering what would happen next.
