Kara's dad, LCDR Michael Joseph Phipps, M.D., served in the U.S Navy for 14 years, completing an orthopedic residency and a spine surgery fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. When Kara was only 7-years-old, her dad passed away.
“One of the fondest memories that I have with my Dad, is when he would bring my sister and I, to our family’s favorite Chinese restaurant,” explained Kara. “This familiarity and distant memory still brings a smile to my heart. We continued the tradition after my Dad passed away - whenever we were feeling down, celebrating our end of the year report cards or sometimes ‘just because’... we still love reading our fortunes”
Kara believes her dad would be proud of her for choosing a career that she would be at the service of others. With the financial help from Fallen Patriots, Kara plans to be a special education teacher after college. She currently is a freshman at High Point University in North Carolina.
“Thankfully, with the help of Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, I was able to purchase a new laptop for college,” explained Kara. “I appreciate all that Fallen Patriots does to encourage and enable gold star children, like my sister and I to fulfill our educational goals.”
