Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation is one of seven youth-centered non-profits to benefit

New York City, NY –  Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (Fallen Patriots) is honored to benefit from the fourth annual RBC Race for the Kids on Saturday, September 22 at Brookfield Place in New York City.

Youth INC and Title Sponsor RBC Capital Markets (RBC) hosted a day of athletic challenges and family fun to raise awareness and funds for seven youth-focused charities.  RBC contributed $1.2 million dollars in combined donations from employees and raised a total of $1.7 million dollars.

“This is one of the best days of the year for RBC, where we, as a firm, come together and give back to our community in such a tremendous way,” said Lesley Kelly, Head of Healthcare Trading, Managing Director at RBC Capital Markets.   “I'm so proud that we could bring the Children of Fallen Patriots' mission to this year's Race for the Kids. It was a great day of building awareness, fund raising, and representing CFP with our very own MSK challenge team of 3 women and 1 man - we all won and are winning,” she added.

Almost 4,000 people were in attendance, including 70 Fallen Patriots supporters comprised of staff, donors and scholars.  Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation employee fundraising total was $134,385, plus $33,535 matching gifts, bringing the grand total to $167,920, which equates to over 26 years of college for Gold Star scholars.

Kelly McHugh-Stewart is among the Fallen Patriots scholars to participate in this year’s event.  She was a freshman in college when her father, U.S. Army Colonel John McHugh, was killed in action in Kabul, Afghanistan.  With the help of Fallen Patriots, Kelly graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication/Digital Journalism-Print Focus.  She also holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the New School.  Kelly is now a New York City-based writer currently working on a book about her father.

“Fallen Patriots offered more than a scholarship; it offered me a safety net and a community of other Gold Star families with whom I could share my struggles,” Kelly said.

Fallen Patriots helps bridge a $32,000 funding gap between government assistance programs and the average cost of a four-year degree.  In addition to financial assistance, many surviving military families are comforted to receive emotional support from Fallen Patriots’ Veteran and Gold Star staff members.
